FREN 2130: Contemporary French Culture (3)
FREN 3110: Contemporary French Civilization (3)
COJO 2010: Public Speaking (3)
THEA 1100: Beginning Acting (3)
12 credits from French (FREN) or courses related to the history,
art and political science of the francophone world, in consultation
with your academic advisor. [In addition to other required course
work.] For those who wish to complete the ESL Endorsement, six
of these hours can be earned by taking EDCI 5430 and EDCI 5440,
OR through study abroad in a French-speaking country.
LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENT:
In rating your oral and written French language proficiency, the
Department of Secondary Education uses the scale developed by the
American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
You must take the OPI and WPT and demonstrate that you have
attained a score of Advanced Low or better on both assessments
prior to enrollment in EDSE 4276 (Modern Languages Methods II).
Note that the oral and written language proficiency requirements are
mandated by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher
Education (NCATE).
STUDY ABROAD:
Studying abroad in a French-speaking country is strongly recommended.
Students are encouraged to study abroad to attain the desired target language
proficiency goal and to develop first-hand knowledge of francophone cultures. The
minimum length of this experience should be one semester or two summers,
both in a structured language program, preferably in a home stay situation.
A summer session must be no shorter than a four-week intensive program in
order to be counted towards the study abroad requirement.
UW offers a variety of study-abroad programs. Consult with your academic advisor
and with International Programs faculty for details.
