Updated 7/20 IGETC2021 ver. 1 IGETC Standards Version 2.1
Common Questions about the IGETC
1. What is the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum?
The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is a general education program which community college transfer students can use to fulfill lower-division
general education requirements for either the UC or CSU system.
2. Is completion of the IGETC an admissions requirement?
No. However, UC Berkeley’s College of Letter & Science requires full completion of the IGETC pattern as selection criteria for admission into the College.
3. Is it advisable for all transfer students to follow the IGETC?
No. Some students may be better served by taking courses which fulfill the CSU General Education - Breadth requirements, or the general education pattern of the specific UC
campus to which they plan to transfer. Students pursuing majors that require extensive lower-division major preparation such as Engineering or Business (UC Berkeley) may not
find the IGETC option to be advantageous. The IGETC will probably be most useful for students who wish to keep their options open before deciding to transfer to either a UC or
CSU campus.
4. Is a minimum grade required in all courses used for IGETC certification?
Yes. Both the UC and CSU require a grade of “C” or better in all courses used for the IGETC.
5. May students “double-count” courses toward major and general education requirements?
“Double-counting” of courses is allowed by the UC system. The CSU campuses have limits on the number of courses that can be double counted. Please check with a
counselor regarding this policy.
6. May “pass/no pass” courses be used towards IGETC requirements?
Courses in which a student receives aP “grade may be certified for IGETC if the community college’s policy states that a “P” designation is equivalent to a “C” grade or better
(East Los Angeles College has this policy). It is important to keep in mind that some UC and CSU campuses have limitations on the number of pass/no pass” courses that may
be used to meet degree requirements. Please see a counselor.
7. Must the entire IGETC program be completed in order for a student to be certified under IGETC?
Completion of the full IGETC pattern is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Partial certification is allowed. Students can be missing no more than two courses to qualify for partial
certification. Students who are partially certified must work with the University after transfer to determine how to complete the missing requirements. Warning: You need to
complete minimum UC/CSU transfer admission requirements. Therefore, if you are missing courses in IGETC Areas 1 and/or 2 you may not be eligible for admission and could
put your admissions in jeopardy. Please check with a counselor if you have questions. See #8 for IGETC for STEM requirements.
8. What is IGETC for STEM?
IGETC for STEM is only allowed for ADT degrees which specifically allow completion of IGETC for STEM on the statewide Transfer Model Curriculum. Currently, only the ADT
majors in Chemistry, Biology, and Environmental Science allow this pattern. Students pursing the ADT in Biology, for example, may complete IGETC for STEM, deferring one
course in Area 3 and one course in Area 4 until after transfer. Students must complete the following: all courses in Areas 1, 2 and 5 of the traditional IGETC; and one course in
Area 3A Arts and one course in Area 3B Humanities; and two courses in Area 4 from two different disciplines.
9. When do I apply for IGETC certification?
IGETC certification should be done at the end of your last semester at ELAC before transferring. You should apply for IGETC certification when you request your final transcript.
The IGETC Certification Request form and the Transcript Request Form are available at the Admissions Office. You must select the check box choosing either UC IGETC or
CSU IGETC depending on which university system campus you have decided to attend. If courses from another college are being used towards certification, the pass along box
should be checked on this form. All transcripts from other colleges must be on file at the Admissions Office. If you have taken Advanced Placement (AP) tests, you must have a
copy of your College Board transcript sent to the Admissions Office. If you have taken International Baccalaureate tests, you must have your scores sent directly from the IB
organization to the Admissions Office.
