Guidelines for submitting a Prerequisite Equivalency Petition
Napa Valley College strives to guide students into courses in which they will have the greatest chance for academic
success. To achieve this goal, the catalog listings include statements concerning prerequisites, co-requisites or other
limitations on enrollment.
1. A “prerequisite” means a course that a student is required to have taken prior to enrolling in a specific course
or program.
2. A “corequisite” means a course that a student is required to take at the same time as another course.
3. An “advisory” or “recommendation for enrollment” means a condition of enrollment that a student is advised,
but not required, to meet before enrolling in a course or program.
4. In order for a course to count as a prerequisite, a minimum grade of “C” must be earned. (Exceptions may be
made only by instructor assessment of relevant background experience.)
In addition, please make sure the form is completed in blue or black ink and all applicable fields are completed.
This form must be accompanied by supporting documentation such as an official or unofficial copy of your academic
transcript. All documentation must include the students name and name of institution as part of the document. Please
staple to the form when submitting. Test scores or AP scores are not acceptable for submission for a prerequisite
equivalency.
This form must be submitted to the office of A&R to be processed for registration in the course(s) below at least
7 to 10 business days prior to the time of the student’s registration priority or at the time of registration priority.
You will be notified by email once the petition has been processed.
High School Students must submit a Prerequisite Equivalency Petition with supporting documentation, as outlined
above, during the assigned registration period with the High School Permit to Attend.
