FOUND PROPERTY – NOTICE TO LAW ENFORCEMENT
If the property you found was $25 or more of U.S. Currency or goods with a value of at least $25
but less than $100, complete Section I and III, sign and return to the Brown County
Sheriff’s Office within 5 days of finding the property.
If the property you found was goods (not U.S. Currency) with a value of $100 or more, complete
Sections I, II and III, sign and return to the Brown County Sheriff’s Office within 15 days
of finding the property.
§170.11 provides financial liability for up to twice the value of the money or goods if the
finder fails to provide notice or comply with the provision of §170.07 to 170.10.

Section II- §170.08 Goods Valued at $100 or More
If the finder wishes to claim the property, they must take the following steps.
Notify the law enforcement agency within 15 days of finding the property.
Publish a Class 2 notice (§985 Wis. Stats) at their expense in the Green Bay Press Gazette
Within 60 days of finding the property and before using it in any manner that lowers its value,
obtain an appraisal through the Sheriff’s Office. The finder is responsible for the cost of the
appraisal, which must be certified by the Sheriff and kept on file at the Sheriff’s Office.
Keep receipts, the owner must reimburse the finder for any cost and a reasonable compensation
for the finder’s trouble.
Fail
ure to provide notice or obtain an appraisal within the applicable timelines will prevent the finder
from claiming the property.
I understand I am required to pay to publish a Class 2 notice per §985 Wis. Stats.
I understand that I must obtain an appraisal from the Sheriff's Office within 60 days of
finding the property.
Section III Custody of Found Property
Other than firearms or items that may have been involved in a crime, law enforcement will not
take custody of found property unless the finder is waiving their claim to the property.
The Sheriff’s Office will post a notice of the found property in two public locations within the
jurisdiction the property was located.
The finder is financially responsible for any damage to the property by their use.

Law enforcement will take custody of the found firearm or property that may have evidentiary
value. However, I wish to claim the property under §170.10 if no owner appears within 90 days
of this notice. I understand that if this property is evidence of a crime it may be subject to
disposition in a criminal court case.
I will retain the property and release it to the owner if they appear within 90 days of this notice.
