Summer 2019 Externship Application Packet
Externship students earn credit for practicing substantive legal skills off campus and attending required
class meetings. With academic oversight, externships allow for full or part-time legal experience with
practicing lawyers or judges.
Eligibility: to enroll in an externship course, the minimum requirements are:
o 28 units toward JD completed,
o Good academic standing and satisfaction of any course co- or pre-requisite,
o Application by the deadline with all supporting documents, and
o Must be able to attend the Summer Seminar on Saturday, June 1, 2019 or in the alternative,
Tuesday, May 7, 2019, from 9:00 AM 2:30 PM.
Before you apply:
Find an Off-campus Externship Placement.
Secure a placement working with the Office of Career Services or on your own. Once student has applied
with the off-campus office or agency, that student may submit the Externship Application Packet even if
still waiting for an interview or offer.
How to apply:
Complete the Summer 2019 Externship Application Packet provided below.
The Summer 2019 Externship Application Packet contains a registration request form and an externship
application.
Registration request form
1. Complete the top portion with your information. Under credit course selections, check Add. The
department is Law.
2. Then select the course number and name from the following summer externship courses:

Law 896A Externship: Civil Field Placement

Law 896F
Externship
: Criminal Litigation
o
Law 896C
Externship:
Judicial Externship
o
Law 896B
Externship
: Advanced (for repeating externships).
3 You may leave the section # blank. The externship director will fill sections as applications are
approved. There is no guarantee of space in any section.
4 Next, give the number of credits that you would like to earn. The minimum number is 2 and the
maximum is 8. Students earn 1 credit for every 45 hours externed between May 29, 2019 and July
21, 2019. Count the hours planned to extern within this instructional period and divide by 45 to
get the number of credits. No fraction of a credit may be earned. No hours externed before or
after those dates will be counted toward externship credit. Students are responsible for confirming
graduation requirements and enrollment status, including the number of credits sought.
The Externship Application
1. Complete the top box with your information.
2. The name of the course must be one of the four externship courses listed above.
3. Fill in the next three blanks with credit completion, credit expectation for this course, and GPA.
4. In the second box, specify your placement.
a. If you have received an offer for an externship, then please provide accurate and
complete information on your placement. The externship cannot be approved without this
information.
b. If you have applied to a placement but have not yet received an offer, then list where you
have applied and check the box. Students must at least apply to a placement offering
externships by the deadline to be considered for externship credit. The placement must be
approved by May 31, 2019 and there must be space in a section for a student to be
enrolled in an externship course.
5. Complete the blanks asking for externship or clinic history.
6. Please sign and date acknowledging that the application is not a guarantee of enrollment and that
class attendance is required.
7. Save the date for the Summer Seminar and plan to attend. Students who cannot attend the June 1
st
seminar must attend the alternative seminar on May 7
th
. Students who do not attend either
seminar will not earn credit for an externship during the 2019 summer session.
Submit both forms plus your current resume by April 29, 2019.
o Email the application packet along with your updated resume to externships@ggu.edu. Hard
copies will not be accepted.
o Students seeking externship credit but who have not secured a placement must still apply by the
deadline, per the instructions above.
o No application for pay and credit will be received after April 29, 2019.

*Audited courses do not count towards degree completion. Audit status is not available to students enrolled in a degree program except for SJD students. Auditors may
be required to participate in class discussions but they receive no grade or academic credit for the course. SJD and non -matriculated students may change to audit status
until the last day of instruction for the term. Once the status of a course has been changed to audit, it may not be revoked.
Wait Lists: If you are wait listed for a course, you will be contacted to add the course if space becomes available. You will not

paid by GGU; (iii) the provisions of CCP 1283.05 are incorporated herein; and (iv) there is no limitation on the available remedies that I may seek. THIS IS A
