Senate Resolution No. 56 adopted July 9, 1941 as a prerequisite to receiving compensation and employment by the State of
Michigan, resolves “that the heads of several state departments, boards, commissions and institutions obtain an affidavit from their
employees that said employees do not have membership in any political party or organization which advocates the overthrow of our
constitutional form of government in the United States.”
Act 23 of the Public Acts of 1935 of the State of Michigan requires that instructional personnel in any state educational institution,
supported in whole or in part by public funds, subscribe to the following oath: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support the
constitution of the United States of America and the constitution of the State of Michigan, and that I will faithfully discharge the
duties of my position according to the best of my ability.”
