Faculty members teaching in the Emergency Management program are
seasoned professionals from various disciplines with extensive experience in
emergency management, homeland security or crisis-related disciplines.
Disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, terror attacks, civil
unrest events and cyberattacks require educated and competent emergency
professionals and homeland security experts trained in emergency
management with the skills to assist in crisis preparedness and risk mitigation,
response and recovery.
Emergency management focuses on improving community resilience to
minimize both the short- and long- term effects of disaster situations. Whether
it is working for local, state or federal government agencies or in the private
sector, the demand for emergency management and security professionals
continues to rise.
Recognized by the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal
Emergency Management Agency, Saint Louis University's Bachelor of Science
in emergency management gives undergraduate students the skills they need
to help communities during high-stress situations prevent, prepare, respond
and recover.
The major in emergency management is a comprehensive and
multi-disciplined program. It includes many aspects of emergency response
and recovery support functional areas including communications, business
operations, firefighting, law enforcement, search and rescue, hazardous
materials, military, public health and human/social services.
The program provides a highly integrated applied learning and leadership
experience for you, the student, not only to develop your management acumen
and skills, but strengthen your critical thinking, collaborative problem solving
and interpersonal communication competencies – enhancing your value in this
new and exciting profession.
In order to complete the major in emergency management students must
complete 45 credits of coursework. Classses include:

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
All applications are thoroughly and carefully reviewed. Applicants must be
a graduate of an accredited high school or have a score on the GED of 2250
or higher. Applicants should have a minimum GPA of 2.5 (unless qualified
for provisional admittance) and be 22 years of age or older (exceptions
made on a case-by-case basis). In reviewing an application, previous
academic performance in college-level coursework is examined holistically.
A writing and/or math assessment test may be necessary when bringing in
few or no transfer credits.
+ Application: Complete the application for admission at slu.edu/online.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis but students are encouraged
to apply at least one month before the start of the term.
+ Request transcripts: Have official transcripts mailed directly from all
previously attended colleges to: School for Professional Studies

+ Interview: successful completion of an admission meeting with an
admissions counselor. This can be done over the phone or on campus.
Credit for prior learning: Students may receive credit for prior learning (the
total transfer credit hours from prior learning, however, may not exceed the
maxium permitted by SLU, SPS or specific program).
+ Transfer credits from other accredited institutions or approved by the
American Council of Education (ACE)
+ College Level Examination Program (CLEP) testing
+ DSST testing (formerly DANTES testing), industry certifications with an
external accreditor in which certification is received upon successful
testing.
+ Airframe & powerplant (A&P) certification
Upon completion of the bachelor’s degree in emergency management, students
will have completed a majority of the requirements for the International
Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) Certification as an Associate
Emergency Manager (AEM). Many employers require this professional
certification for posted new positions. Potential careers include:
+ Working in government agencies at the local, state or national level as
emergency managers and homeland security professionals.
+ Providing risk management, preparedness and response for public health and
health care systems.
+ Working with organizations that provide situational awareness such as
intelligence, mapping, mass notifications and weather.
+ Coordinating disaster exercises to increase a community’s preparedness and
resiliency.
+ Coordinating responses to regional and large-scale incidents such as civil
unrest and flooding.
+ Being an emergency response coordinator in business continuity for private
businesses.
+ Managing media relations during a crisis situation.
In addition to offering a reduced tuition rate (SPS tuition is half the cost of
SLU’s traditional programs) we can assist you in applying for federal, state and
institutional funds. To determine eligibility for financial assistance, submit the
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) early for maximum
consideration. FAFSA is available online at: www.fafsa.ed.gov.
SPS als offers numerous scholarships and awards specifically for new

If necessary, SPS offers budget payment plans and a deferred payment option
for students whose employers reimburse tuition costs after completion of a
course.
Saint Louis University's School for Professional Studies is committed to
providing flexible policies that allow you to complete your degree - wherever
your current position takes you.
SPS offers a reduced tuition rates for first responders, active military and
veterans. Active military and veterans using tuition assistance or GI Bill
Benefits pursuing any of its programs could pay just $400 per credit hour.
SLU is a proud participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program, and may supply
50 percent of remaining unmet tuition and fee charges for up to 80 students.
The Yellow Ribbon Program is available to students in all degree programs,
excluding the School of Medicine, but please note that it cannot be combined
with other institutional awards to result in a surplus of financial awards. The
amount each student in the Yellow Ribbon Program will receive may vary
according to the cost of their degree program and any tuition specific
scholarships or grant they may have been awarded, but cannot exceed the
maximum contracted annual amount of $10,000.
