NORTH CAROLINA AGRICULTURAL AND TECHNICAL STATE UNIVERSITY
THE LEWIS AND ELIZABETH DOWDY SCHOLARS ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
Program Overview
The Lewis and Elizabeth Dowdy Scholars Enrichment Program is a preeminent scholarship awarded to entering freshman
who have shown excellence in academics and scholarly leadership during their high school matriculation. The prestigious
Dowdy Scholars Enrichment Program celebrate two phenomenal educators - the late Dr. Lewis C. Dowdy, sixth president
of North Carolina A&T College and first chancellor of North Carolina A&T State University and his wife Mrs. Elizabeth
Dowdy. They served the University for twenty-one years, which included the tumultuous 1960s and 1970s.
Eligibility
The Dowdy Scholars Enrichment Program is open to incoming freshmen pursuing their first bachelor’s degree. The
minimum criteria include a weighted cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher. Scholastic test scores require a minimum SAT of
1200 (1270 **redesign SAT) from a single test administration or an ACT of at least 26. All eligible applicants must complete
the application form, which includes a one-page personal statement and two letters of recommendation.
**In March 2016, the College Board began administering the redesigned SAT that evaluates math and evidence-based reading and
writing. Applicants may still submit pre-March 2016 SAT scores in which the minimum required is a 1200 verbal and math only.
Personal Statement & Recommendation Letters
To distinguish yourself from other students with similar academic credentials please submit a one-page personal statement.
Prompt: First, describe the world you come from and how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations. Then, address how
becoming a Dowdy Scholar will help to achieve those dreams and aspirations AND impact the world you come from. The Dowdy
Scholars Enrichment Program seeks to honor the legacy of the first chancellor of North Carolina A&T State University by
promoting the values of superior education, exemplary leadership and outstanding public service. In the submission of
your two letters of recommendation those same values that Dr. Lewis C. Dowdy represented should be addressed.
Scholarship Notification
Applications for consideration and review will be available beginning October 1 and must be received by January 1, prior
to the fall semester that you will enter as a new freshman (e.g.; January 1, 2017 for consideration for Fall 2017). Once
applications are received and the deadline has been met, applicants will be carefully screened by a scholarship committee.
Recommendations will be made and all applicants will be notified of their decision. Please note that submission of an
application does not guarantee selection as a Dowdy Scholar. This is a competitive scholarship program that will be
awarded annually based on committee recommendation.
Award & Renewal Process
The Dowdy Scholars Enrichment Program is supported through federal, state, and institutional funding to create a
substantial scholarship package. Those selected as Dowdy Scholars will receive a full 4-year renewable scholarship which
includes tuition and related fees, room and board (standard double occupancy). In order to remain eligible, Dowdy Scholars
must maintain a 3.50 cumulative GPA and earn a minimum of 30 credit hours annually which will be reviewed at the end
of each spring semester. Failure to meet any of the requirements listed above will forfeit scholarship funding. Students
who are deficient in earning the 30 semester credit hours or specified grade point average during the Fall and Spring
semesters will have a one-time opportunity to correct these deficiencies during the summer or complete an appeal to regain
eligibility. Scholarship funding is not applicable to summer school expenses.
Study Abroad & Co-op/Internship
Scholars who study abroad generally receive 12 semester credit hours. Consequently, study abroad students will be
required to earn 27 semester credit hours for the academic year. Co-op and intern students in non-credit programs will be
required to earn 15 semester credit hours for the semester they are in residence.
Enrichment Program
The co-curricular model of the Dowdy Scholars Enrichment Program is designed to support our scholars throughout their
matriculation at North Carolina A&T State University. The program strives to create diverse opportunities that engage
students in the integration of knowledge in and out of the classroom. Scholars will be exposed to opportunities of leadership
development, social awareness, research with faculty, co-op/internships, study abroad experiences, and so much more.
