* Working dog – is a dog classified under Section 2 of the Dog Control Act 1996.
** Pet dog – are dogs not included in the specific categories of Spayed/Neutered Dogs, Working Dogs, Hearing Dogs, Companion
Dogs or Guide Dogs for the Blind.
*** Spayed/neutered dogs – Evidence in the form of a veterinary certificate, or a declaration from the owner to the effect that the
dog is spayed or neutered, will be required, where the fact is not already recorded on the Council’s dog register.
**** Dangerous dog – Authority classification – any dog which has on evidence attesting to aggressive behaviour and has been
classified as such.
Important Notes
Dog Control Act 1996 -
Section 42(1) of the Dog Control Act 1996 requires that:
“…every person commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding $3,000 who is the owner
of a dog of a greater age than 3 months unless the dog is registered under this Act for the current registration year…”
Please note failure to register your dog(s) will result in an infringement notice ($300 per dog) being issued under Section
66 of the Dog Control Act 1996.
Microchips - Your dog will need a microchip if it is:
• A new puppy;
• A dog registered after 01 July 2006 (working farm dogs are exempt);
• A dog that has been declared menacing or dangerous.
Please see your vet to arrange microchipping. If your dog has a microchip number and the microchip column does not
have a ‘Yes’ can you please attach one of the stickers that came with the microchip to this form, or write the number down
and attach it to this form.
Disability Assist dog - is a dog that has been certified by appropriate authorised organisation (no fee).
Owner date of birth - Your date of birth is required to enable you to be distinguished from other persons with the same name.
Certainty of identification is required in the enforcement of the provision of the Dog Control Act 1996.
