If you are unable to obtain a certificate of your dog’s sterilization (being spayed or neutered), a letter from a
veterinarian stating they have examined your dog and can verify that your dog has been altered will suffice.
You may not renew your dog’s license beyond your dog’s rabies expiration date. If your dog’s rabies
vaccination expires in less than a year, only purchase a 1-year license and provide an updated rabies
vaccination record to keep the license current. Remember that once your rabies vaccination expires, so does
your dog’s license.
If you are purchasing your license at the shelter, you do not need to fill out the application; simply bring a
government-issued photo ID and a current rabies certificate. You do not need to bring your pet with you.
For renewals and replacements, please provide your current License Tag Number. Please note that
replacement tags incur an additional fee.
A late fee will apply to any dog older than 4 months that has resided in San Francisco for 30 days or more
and has not been licensed.
