Division: Base Ten Model
Conceptual Lesson
Grade 4 · Unit 3 · Lesson 5
MC: 4.NBT.6
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Steps:
1. Build the dividend.
2. Equally share hundred-squares.
If extra blocks, unbundle.
3. Repeat steps 2 & 3 for ten-rods.
4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 for one-cubes.
5. Determine the quotient.
Division Equation:
8 ÷ 4 = 2
dividend ÷ divisor = quotient
Bundle: compose base ten blocks into sets
of 10 and group them into the base ten block
of the next higher place value
Ex. Bundle 10 one-cubes and group them
into 1 ten-rod
Unbundle: decompose base ten blocks into
sets of ten of the next smaller place value
Ex. Unbundle 1 ten-rod into 10 one-
cubes
