Pregnancy Policy
Dental Assisting Program
The regulations of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission: Regulator Guide 8.13 allow a pregnant student to
decide whether to formally declare the pregnancy to the advantage of lower dose limit for the embryo/fetus.
The choice whether to declare a pregnancy is completely voluntary. The following options will be provided.
The student may:
Voluntarily declare the pregnancy by notifying the Program Director in writing and provide the following:
1. A signed physician’s statement that includes the student’s name with the estimated month and year
of delivery.
2. A declaration of pregnancy.
3. Schedule a conference with the Program Director regarding the regulations and potential risks.
4. Sign a Release of Liability Statement releasing Indian Hills Community College and the dental clinical
education setting from liability and to continue in the program.
The signed, “Release of Responsibility for Pregnancy” (available through the Program Director), will be included
in the student’s permanent IHCC record. The student will review a copy of the Radiation Protection Regulations
and Current Reports from the National Council for Radiation Protection and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission
regarding the eects of ratios on the unborn fetus. The student will be required to wear an additional fetal
monitoring dosimeter and will be directed in the use of this dosimeter. The fee for the fetal dosimeter is the
responsibility of the student.
5. Be allowed 4-weeks excused absence for an uncomplicated delivery.
6. Work with the Program Director and Clinical Coordinator to plan out the student’s studies so that the
student can graduate with their class.
Choose not to declare the pregnancy and no further action by the Program Director or other ocials will result.
All enrolled female students in the Dental Assisting Program are required to sign o on the pregnancy policy,
stating their understanding of it.
