Task: Correctly instruct the patient to measure his or her peak expiratory flow rate.
Supplies and Conditions: Peak flow meter, mouthpiece, medical order, waste container, patient chart/EHR, and a pen.
Standards: A maximum of three attempts may be used to complete the task. The time limit for each attempt
is 20 minutes, with a minimum score of 70 percent. Scoring: Determine student’s score by
dividing points awarded by total points possible and multiplying results by 100.

1. Assemble equipment and supplies; wash hands.

3. Be sure the patient is in a comfortable position and any
restrictive clothing (such as a tie or collar) is loosened
before initiating the procedure.

4. Set the indicator to the bottom (lowest number) of the

5. Instruct the patient to take in a deep breath, place the
meter to mouth, close lips around the mouthpiece, and
blow as hard as he or she can.
