Central Carolina Technical College
Flexible Work Schedule Guidelines
The following are guidelines for a variable schedule and compressed workweek:
Any employee may request a flexible work schedule by completing the request form. Full-time or part-
time employees in permanent positions and temporary employees are eligible to request a flexible
work schedule. This is not a required program. This program may be extended, revised or discontinued
based on College needs.
The employee's department head or director must recommend approval of participation in this
program. Final approval of participation must be given by the vice president, and may not be appealed.
All approved and denied requests must be sent to the Personnel Director.
The College's core business hours for student services are 8:00am to 6:00pm, Monday through
Thursday and 8:00am to 4:30pm on Friday; for all other administrative areas the core business hours
are 8:00am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. Appropriate coverage and all regular departmental
functions must be maintained during these core hours, and any extended hours during registration
periods. Employees may not arrive before 7:00am and may not depart later than 7:00pm (except
during registration periods when business hours are extended).
A compressed workweek is defined as working four workdays instead of the normally scheduled five
workdays during a workweek while continuing to work at least 37.5 hours per week.
o When a compressed workweek is used, department heads and directors must ensure different
days of the week are chosen to evenly distribute the work coverage.
A variable work schedule is defined as working five workdays during the normal workweek but with
work hours other than 8:00am to 4:30pm.
Non-exempt employees may not exceed 40 work hours per workweek without receiving overtime or
compensatory time, which requires prior approval by the vice president.
Employees must include at least a 30 minute or a one hour lunch break each day generally between
the hours of 11:00am and 2:00pm (exceptions approved by supervisor) and may not be used to shorten
the work day.
An individual's approval to work a flexible work schedule may be altered or rescinded temporarily or
permanently at the discretion of the department head, dean, director or vice president. An employee
may not change their flexible schedule without approval.
An employee taking leave must take the amount of leave consistent with their approved flexible
schedule.
If an approved State holiday is observed on an employee's regularly scheduled day off, an alternate day
should be taken, as approved by their supervisor, within one year from the date of the holiday. Holiday
compensatory time will be taken in full day increments. All State holidays will be charged as 7.5 hours.
The remainder of the hours for the day will be charged to annual leave or leave without pay.
Employees are responsible for submitting leave forms/time sheets reflecting the number of hours to
be charged.
An employee's pay will not be affected as long as the employee maintains their approved flexible
schedule.
