1. Are you the owner of the property where the chickens will be kept?

***If not, the application must include a notarized statement from the owner of the
property giving their permission for the applicant to keep chickens on the property.

3. Provide detailed information regarding the construction of the chicken coop including the
materials the coop will be constructed from, the total square footage of the coop (maximum
of 120 square feet), the height of the coop (maximum of 6 feet), and how the coop will
provide shelter from the elements.

4. Provide detailed information regarding the construction of the chicken run including the
materials the run will be constructed from, the total square footage of the run, the height
of the run, and how the run will covered.

3. Provide a to scale drawing showing the placement of the coop and run on the property
and the distance from all property lines (minimum of 7’ from any property line) and distance
from any neighboring residential structure (minimum of 25’). The drawing must also show
the location of the applicant’s residential structure on the property.

4. Provide detailed information on how the coop and run will be screened from the view of
neighboring properties, the screening material to be used and the height of the screen
material.

5. Provide detailed information on how adequate ventilation and insulation will be provided
to the coop and run to maintain suitable temperatures for the animals kept there in both
extreme heat and cool conditions.

Applicants should note the following information:
It is unlawful for any person to treat a chicken in a cruel or inhumane manner.
Except as otherwise provided in the City Code, it is unlawful for any person to keep or
harbor or allow the breeding of any animals for the purpose of operating a business to sell,
trade, slaughter or give away for slaughter.
It is unlawful for any person to suffer or permit chickens to run at large.
Permit Required. It is unlawful for any person to keep any chicken without a permit from
the City. The permit is issued on an annual basis and shall expire on the 1st day of each
January.
Sanitation. All chickens, coops, chicken runs, associated supplies and waste shall be
maintained in a healthy, clean and sanitary condition and shall be free at all times from
obnoxious odors and from the presence of rodents, vermin and other animals. Waste may
be placed in the chicken owner’s residential waste container or composted appropriately
in the chicken owner’s back yard.
Slaughtering of chickens on the property is prohibited.
Chickens may not be raised or kept with the purpose of fighting.
An initial inspection of the property, coop and run is required before a permit can be issued.
No inspection is required for a renewal of a permit. The chicken coop and run may be
inspected at any reasonable time by the City or its authorized agent.
If the chicken owner’s property is covered by Private Restrictions or Covenants on the use
property which restrict or prohibit the keeping of chickens, a permit shall not be issued.
Interpretation and enforcement of private restrictions is a sole responsibility of the private
parties involved.
The City may deny or revoke any permit application or renewal if it deems the applicant:
(1) Is unwilling or unable to fulfill the provisions of the Ordinance;
(2) Fails to comply with the provisions of the Ordinance;
(3) Submits inaccurate or incomplete permit information;
(4) Fails to meet the conditions of the permit;
(5) Is creating a nuisance; or
(6) Is endangering the public health and safety.
It is up to the applicant to apply for timely renewals of the chicken permits. No notices will
be provided. Failure to receive an annual permit may result in loss of permit, extra fees,
or fines, or a ticket and removal of chickens.

in revocation of any permit previously issued.
