Art Talent Scholarships!
I am pleased to hear of your interest in the Art Talent Scholarship offered by
Whittier College. I hope the following information will be helpful to you.
Each year, students demonstrating outstanding ability in studio art are granted
an Art Talent Scholarship. Scholarships are valued up to $12,000 and are
renewable for four years at Whittier College, provided the recipient maintains
satisfactory academic performance and is involved in art activities of the campus.
The quality and strength of each applicant’s portfolio, essay, recommendations,
and academic background are considered in selecting the recipients of this award.
Awards are granted to students intending to major in art as well as students
pursuing other majors. Financial need and the applicant’s proposed major are
not considered in determining scholarship recipients.
Whether learning traditional art making skills like painting and sculpture or
studying the cultural impact of visual media, students majoring in art at Whittier
College will gain the visual literacy necessary to be active participants in our
shared visual culture. The Studio Art program consists of courses in drawing,
painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, digital photography, and video. Other
tracks study the making, circulation, and reception of images across time and
cultures, as well as the commercial application of visual art and design principles
in the production of creative content for various media platforms. Our teaching
emphasizes traditional skills, perceptual abilities, and contemporary issues in art.
Classes are small, and instruction is largely individualized. This outline may help
you know whether this is a program suited to your needs and interests.
Please note that you may also apply for talent scholarships from the
Music and Theatre Departments, but if offered multiple talent
scholarships you can only accept an award from one department and
must decline all other offers.
The accompanying Application Guidelines sheet explains the Art Talent
Scholarship application process. For further information, please contact
talent@whittier.edu. I wish you well in making your college choice, and I look
forward to assisting you as you consider Whittier College.
Sincerely yours,
Danny Jauregui
