APPLICANT HAS READ AND ACKNOWLEDGES THE FOLLOWING:
1) Per City Council Resolution 77967, the new street name shall be related to an economic development
or redevelopment activity, commemorate a significant historical event, or honor an individual. If
honoring an individual, the individual being honored must be living and must have positively impacted
the lives of a nation.
2) New street name cannot cause confusion or be similar to another street name in the City of Oakland or
nearby cities.
3) Name change cannot impact traffic flow or emergency access or cause hardship on residents and/or
businesses.
4) Name change cannot disrupt sequential numbering of streets.
5) Applicant must provide a signed petition by affected residents and businesses with 67% supporting the
name change with this application.
6) Applicant must prepare a letter for an official request for the name change and include a biography of
the individual honored, if applicable, along with this application.

For Changing a Street Name
1. What are limitations when choosing a new Street name?
Answer: New street names must be related to an economic development, redevelopment activity,
commemorate a significant historical event, or honor a living individual that has positively impacted the
lives of a nation or the world.
2. How much does it cost?
Answer: Currently, the permit fee for changing a street name is $13,500. Fees must be paid prior to City
staff review of application submittal.
3. Who can change a street name?
Answer: Anyone can apply to change a street name, but the application must be tied to a property owner
and the corresponding assessor’s parcel number (APN).
4. My neighbors and I disagree on the new name. Can I still submit an application?
Answer: Only if your application includes a petition signed by all affected residents and businesses with at
least 67% of signatures showing support.
5. Is approval guaranteed if I submit a complete package?
Answer: No. Your application still needs City Council approval, is subject to staff review of traffic flow,
access, potential hardships, and may be subject to a public hearing.
