Attach a separate sheet with your rationale statement addressing the following criteria:
1) The justification for the topical major must indicate the purpose of the major for the student. Include
why
the purpose cannot be met through a regular major(s), minor(s).
2) The justification for the topical major must show how the selected courses accomplish the purpose and
represent a unified area of study that merits the label of “academic major.” That is, the justification must
explain how the major represents an appropriate set of courses for academic and career purposes
3) If the topical major will use the name of a major found at other baccalaureate institutions or
approximates a program or major offered at other institutions, the justification should explain how
the
proposed topical major compares to similar programs at other institutions. The applicant should attach
program descriptions of similar majors at other institutions to the application.
4) A letter of support from the faculty sponsor of the topical major should be attached to the application
and that faculty member should address items 1, 2 and 3 above.
