sheet, explain why you chose to become a Biology Major and why you think you are qualified to receive a
scholarship. Include a statement of career goals, any collegiate honors, scholarships, and awards that you
have won, involvement in undergraduate research, fellowships, internships, leadership position, and
collegiate service/honors organizations. Do not apply if you are a senior who will graduate this May or
August. Seniors graduating in December will receive half the value of any scholarships awarded. Do not
apply if you have not successfully completed at least one major’s biology course.

The Landwer scholarships are granted on the basis of merit and financial
need to declared majors in the Department of Biological Sciences (current
freshmore through seniors) who have taken or are taking BIOL 1403
(students with the equivalent of this course elsewhere also qualify).
Submission of a FAFSA is required for consideration. Awards will be for one
year and can be renewed for a second year. Chances for renewal increase if
awardee actively participates in undergraduate research in the life sciences.
Usually, awards are valued at $1,500/year. A new personal statement and
letter of recommendation, along with most recent transcript, are required for
renewal. Submission of a new FAFSA is required for renewal.

The Rushing scholarships are awarded to majors in the Department of
Biological Sciences (current sophomores through seniors) on the basis
of academic merit. This scholarships is available, valued at $1,000, and
are nonrenewable.

J. Harvey Harris Scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding
undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Microbiology (BS or MS
levels) or Biology (PhD level with emphasis/specialization in
Microbiology). Selection is based on academic merit and leadership.

The John Burns scholarship is awarded to incoming Freshmen through
Senior majors in Biological Sciences who are first-generation college
students (i.e. none of your parents graduated from a 4-year college) with
GPA of at least 3.0 and financial need. Submission of a FAFSA is required
for consideration. The Burns scholarship has a value of $1,000 per year,
and can be renewed up to three times. Renewal requires a new personal
statement and new FAFSA, along with most recent transcript.

The Bill & Marybeth Stevens scholarship is awarded to Sophomores and
Seniors majoring Biological Sciences that are Texas residents and have
a GPA above 3.25. Dollar amount is variable.

The Ayers scholarship is awarded to majors in the Department of Biological
Sciences (current Freshmen through Seniors) who have a GPA between 2.0
and 3.5, and are working toward a career in teaching. Dollar amount is
variable.

The Allan and Brenda Van Horn Scholarship is awarded to majors in the
Department of Biological Sciences on the basis of academic merit. To
apply, one must have a G.P.A. of 3.0, or higher, and have successfully
completed at least 15 hours of course credit at Texas Tech University.
