GRADUATE WRITING COMPETENCY TEST
REGISTRATION FORM
Graduate students are required to take the GWCT during the first semester of enrollment. Two
opportunities during each semester of study will be given to pass the GWCT. A passing score
report must be in your Graduate School file before you can register for a second semester.
The only exemptions from the GWCT are: scaled score of 385 or above on the MAT; score of
450 or above on the verbal portion of the GRE; or a 3.5 on the analytical writing portion of the
GRE; or a 450 or above on the GMAT; or a passing score on the ASU BWCT. Documentation
must be provided.
The GWCT requires you to write an essay of approximately 600 words. Grading will focus
specifically on clear organization, support statements and mechanics (grammar, spelling,
punctuation and correct language).
Any student requiring alternative formats for testing, or other types of accommodations,
due to a documented disability should advise the Dean of the Graduate School at least one
week prior to the registration deadline.
