ADVANCED WRITING REQUIREMENT (AWR) COMPLETION FORM
TO BE COMPLETED BY THE STUDENT
Last Name: First name:
Touro Law Center ID#: Final Paper Submission Date:
The American Bar Association requires that every student produce legal writing that reflects substance, originality, analysis, and
rigor. Each student must satisfy the Advanced Writing Requirement (AWR) as part of his or her graduation requirements for the
J.D. degree. In order to meet the AWR requirement, the student must engage in a significant piece of supervised legal research that
culminates in a writing of at least 20 pages, inclusive of footnotes, earning a grade of B or better. The paper must be double spaced,
with one-inch margins, on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper, in 12 point Times New Roman font, with footnotes in 10 point font.
The goals of the AWR are to provide students with an opportunity for: 1) engaging in independent legal research; 2) analyzing and
making a sustained reflection on a particular area of law; and 3) experiencing an intense, faculty-supervised writing experience.
Writings that satisfy the AWR should reflect legal research, rigorous analysis of a substantive legal issue, and clarity of expression.
The Advanced Writing Requirement must be submitted by the student, in its final form with the Advanced Writing Requirement
Completion Form, on a date specified by the supervising faculty member, but no later than the first day of the student’s final
semester.
Upon satisfactory completion of the AWR requirement, the supervising faculty member must complete the
Advanced Writing Requirement Completion Form, and return the completed form, together with a final,
clean copy of the paper, the AWR rubric, and the faculty-edited first draft, to the Registrar’s Office.
