PHASE 2: THE INTERMEDIATE HORSEMAN
This is the second step in the 4-H Horse Advancement program. When you have
completed these 12 skills, the horsemanship tests you are ready to be a 4-H
Intermediate Horseman. As a 4-H Intermediate Horseman you may go on trail
rides with your horse club and take part in games, activities, and contests as
approved by your club leader.

2. Spell and tell where the following
unsoundnesses are located: ring bone,
curb, thorough pin, splint, side bone,
and hernia.

3. Name and spell the parts of your
horse’s feet and legs: sole, frog, wall,
gaskin, stifle and cannon.

4. Demonstrate how to properly pick up a
horse’s front and rear feet; also clean
the hoof.

5. Demonstrate how to properly back your
horse from the ground.

6. Riding
a. Know and use properly the basic
aids required for riding at the
following gaits:
(1) Walk
(2) Trot
(3) Lope
b. Use correct leads while circling both
directions at a lope. Rider may drop
to a trot between changes of leads
when changing the direction of
circle.
c. Demonstrate a stop from the walk,
trot, and lope.
d. Back your horse a few steps in a
straight line.
7. Feeding: Know how many pounds of
hay and grain your horse will require to
meet his nutrient requirements. This
will depend upon the age and weight of
your horse as well as the amount of
work he is doing.
