Lola B. Newcomb Beginning Teacher Support Grant Program
Focus: Create and support a mentoring program for UW College of Education graduates who are
first-year teachers in Wyoming school districts.
Participants: UW College of Education graduates who are first-year teachers in Wyoming
school districts.
Program: Participants will receive a grant to provide mentoring to them in their classrooms
during the academic school year. Representative activities include attending a professional
meeting in their curricular area, visiting other classrooms, or inviting mentors to their
classrooms. Grant funds may be used for travel expenses, substitute teacher expenses (while
participating in professional development activities or visits to mentor classrooms), classroom
equipment, additions to a classroom library, or field trips. The overall plan must include some
type of mentoring to increase the knowledge and teaching skills of the beginning teacher; all
purchases or activities also must relate to that goal. Please outline your plan in the grant
application.
At the beginning of the next academic year, grant recipients will come to UW’s Laramie campus
to take part in discussions with current undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty
and others involved in teacher preparation. During these discussions, participants will share their
mentoring programs and resulting growth.
Funds: Grants of $1,000 each will be awarded each year. Number of grants varies according to
income available.
Selection: A College of Education committee will select grant recipients. Selection criteria
include: description of the mentoring program as outlined by the participant, letter of support
from the applicant’s administrator, letter from any mentor involved, and willingness to come to
campus to take part in the discussions. Recipients of 2017 grants must be available for
presentations on Monday, Sept. 18, 2017. If a professional meeting is part of the mentoring
plan, please provide the conference name, location and dates. If the mentoring plan includes
purchase of equipment or materials, or the financing of a field trip, please describe in your
mentoring plan.
Application deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, 2017.
