TO: UW graduates employed as first-year teachers in Wyoming school districts
FROM: Debra Beck, Newcomb Grant Selection Committee
SUBJECT: Lola B. Newcomb Beginning Teacher Support Grant Program
DATE: Dec. 12, 2016
Thanks to the generosity of the family of an alumna, the UW College of Education is able to
offer an extraordinary professional development opportunity. The Lola B. Newcomb Beginning
Teacher Support Grant Program funds mentoring programs for College of Education graduates
who are employed as first-year teachers in Wyoming school districts.
The Newcomb Grant allows beginning teachers to select a mentoring program to continue to
build the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the classroom. The accompanying
materials provide suggestions of programs that may be submitted for funding. Each grant is
valued at $1,000.
Recipients of the 2017 Lola B. Newcomb Beginning Teacher Support Grant will be asked to
share their experiences with current students and faculty, so that everyone may benefit from your
mentoring experience. To that end, we have set aside Monday, Sept. 18, 2017, as a day for
presentations and sharing on campus. Grant recipients must be available to visit the Laramie
campus on that day.
We hope you will consider applying for the Newcomb Grant. Deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13,
2017.

and others involved in teacher preparation. During these discussions, participants will share their
mentoring programs and resulting growth.

Selection: A College of Education committee will select grant recipients. Selection criteria
include: description of the mentoring program as outlined by the participant, letter of support
from the applicant’s administrator, letter from any mentor involved, and willingness to come to
campus to take part in the discussions. Recipients of 2017 grants must be available for
