The Economic Impact of a Sporting Event on the Upper Cumberland Region:
The Case of the TSSAA Bluecross Bowl
Fall 2014
This study measured the economic impacts associated with Tennessee Secondary School Athletic
Association (TSSAA) BlueCross Bowl event on the Upper Cumberland region. After accounting
for direct spending estimates in various sectors of the economy, the event generates an annual direct,
indirect, and induced increase in regional output of approximately 2.5 million dollars. The event
also supports approximately 50 direct, indirect, and induced jobs throughout the region.
When the employment impacts are disaggregated at the summary level, the most influenced
occupations from the event are in food preparation, sales, transportation, building and grounds, and
construction. Other, seemingly non-related sectors closely influenced by the event are
management, education, and protective service occupations.
3. Did the project result in a book, journal article, or paper presented at a scholarly meeting?

4. One of the chief purposes of the Faculty Research Program is to provide a beginning impetus

faculty research project lead you to apply for external funding? _____ Yes _____ No
(If “Yes,” please give details.)
(Use extra sheets if necessary to complete any answer.)
Please submit one copy of this report to the Office of Research to ssparks@tntech.edu

Although external funding has not been officially secured, the university is interested in extending
this study into future years. The goal is to assess the feasibility of this sporting event every year
by refining this study and improving the survey instrument. External funding sources being
investigated include the Cookeville Chamber of Commerce, the Highlands Initiative, and other
funding agencies focusing on rural economic development. This is a work-in-progress.
The report is scheduled to be presented to the Cookeville Chamber of Commerce in the Fall of
2014.
In addition, Dr. Sean Alley is planning to present the paper entitled “Sources of Spending at
Regional Sport Events: A Case Study of the TSSAA High School Football Championships in
Tennessee” at the Allied Academies Spring International Conference in New Orleans, April 8-10.
