HOOD COLLEGE STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIPS COMPETITION 2019-2020
Students can apply for Hood College study abroad scholarships at any point in the school year for Spring,
Summer, and Fall programs. There are two deadlines by which scholarship applications are due: October
31 and March 16. Funds are limited so applicants are encouraged to submit a scholarship application as
early as possible.
Applying for study abroad scholarships at Hood College is competitive. Applications will be screened by a
committee comprised of the Director of Study Abroad Programs, a representative of Financial Aid, and
several faculty members from different disciplines who have a strong interest in global studies. There are
two different scholarships. Applicants will be considered for both, but can only receive one of the
scholarships:
1. Shirley Conner Hardinge Center for Global Studies Scholarship
2. Susan Whaley Study Abroad Scholarship
Eligibility: Students should have a GPA of 2.5 or better and not be on Academic or disciplinary probation.
Both scholarships are awarded based on several criteria including financial need, so eligible students will
have filed their FASFA forms with the Financial Aid Office. Students must be applying or have been
accepted into a study abroad program. If the student has not been accepted, any award they receive
would be contingent on acceptance to the described program.
Materials:
Students will need to submit the following materials to the Director of Study Abroad by the deadline. It is
the students’ responsibility to make sure all materials reach the Study Abroad Programs Office complete.
1. Study Abroad Scholarship Application Form (attached)
2. Statement of purpose:
The statement of purpose should be about 500 words long and address the
following prompts: Why did you choose this study abroad program? How will
studying abroad impact your educational goals and future professional
development?
3. Copy of official transcript
4. A letter of recommendation from a Professor
Applications should be turned in to Dr. Scott Pincikowski, Director of Study Abroad Program by 5 p.m. on
the date it is due. Late applications will not be accepted. Students will be informed of awards no later
than December 13, 2019 and April 20, 2020 respectively. The scholarship is not guaranteed. Since this is
a competitive scholarship- students are encouraged to seek information on additional means of support
(loans, grants, other scholarships).
